Our Mission

To provide an educational, entertaining, friendly, efficient and innovative experience of uncompromising quality that meets the dog training needs of the entire family, building balanced relationships through clear communication!

The Team at Total Dog! is comprised of some of the top professionals in the dog community.  Looking at the voids that are present in modern dog training, the Total Dog! Team set out to fill those voids and create a system that is predicated on the individual needs of the dog and owner.

We do not rely on any one method of dog training, as we believe that with dogs being as unique as they are, that we can best serve them and their owners by being able to use any methods/tools in a safe and humane manner. Getting dogs to be more cognitive than reactive is one of the cornerstones to our approach and essential when trying to develop a two-way system of communication! We want to teach you how dogs process information, what their needs are, and how we can help to bring balance back into their lives, which of course builds a fulfilling relationship with you!

When looking for dog training information, tips and resources, look no further than Total Dog! Dog training should be fun. Dog training should be easy. Dog training shouldn’t really feel like…Dog Training! We help you to get the most out of your relationship with your dog. Put Structure, Exercise and NATURAL principles of training into a rewarding relationship. Dogs have long been called Man’s Best Friend…we show you how to return the favor!

Let us EMPOWER YOU with the TOOLS, KNOWLEDGE and CONFIDENCE to succeed!

Brice Cavanaugh

Total Dog! was created by Brice Cavanaugh in the Phoenix Valley. Brice began professional dog training as a United States Marine in 1992, where he served until 2001. Immediately after leaving the Marine Corps, Brice became a law enforcement officer, but was drawn back to K9s, working as an explosives detection canine specialist in the Washington DC area at several government facilities. Brice has been featured nationally on WGN News, with his dog Monk, and gives presentations around the world on topics from dog behavior to detection work. Brice also contributes to various publications, both online and in print, and is collaborating on two major interactive dog/owner projects, DogHelp.com and PuppyPreschool.com.

Total Dog! is the next generation of dog training, offering dog obedience training all over the Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, and surrounding Phoenix areas. The concept of Total Dog is simple: We look at the Training, Psychology, Health, Diet, Grooming, Socialization and more when we develop a plan to help you get the most out of your relationship with your dog! But…why all of that?

Tom McMurchie

Lead Trainer and animal specialist Tom McMurchie was born and raised in Carpentersville, IL where he developed a love for animals at an early age, where as a youth, he would manage to bring home every stray animal that he came across. In high school, Tom worked for a local pet store where he learned hands on animal behavior, handling and care. his love and passion for dogs continued to grow as he grew, and Tom spent most of his free time in the reading of countless books, with his quest being the best that he could be to help rehabilitate and rescue dogs. There was never any doubt in Tom’s mind that his love would be his life!

In 2002, Tom graduated from Dundee Crown HS and left the same week for Basic Training in the United States Army at Fort Jackson, SC. After training, Tom served his first year in South Korea, then was deployed on three separate occasions in Iraq, while he was stationed at Fort Hood, TX. While in Texas, Tom attended the Triple Crown School for Dog Trainers. In 2007, he graduated the Canine Behavior and Training Specialist Program, which is the basis for Tom’s formal training. Tom has continued his education in the hands-on of working with dogs, from basic obedience to behavior modification with dogs scheduled for euthanasia, saving dogs along the way!

Tom received an Honorable Discharge on June 15th, 2009, and joined Team Dog! (the predecessor to Total Dog!) at that time! Tom has two dogs, Tara, an 8 year old Belgian Malinois; and Bailey, a 2 year old German Shorthaired Pointer.
